Sometimes
Sometimes things dont go, after all,
from bad to worse. Some years muscadel
faces down frost, green thrives, the crops dont fail,
sometimes a man aims high, and all goes well.
A people sometimes will step back from war,
elect an honest man, decide they care
enough, that they can't leave some stranger poor.
Some men become what they were born for.
Sometimes our best efforts do not go
amiss, sometimes we do as we meant to.
The sun will sometimes melt a field of sorrow
that seemed hard frozen; may it happen to you.

what people call surrender is actually a noticing.
You notice that everything is continually disappearing,
and you celebrate it as it goes back to wherever it came from.
And eventually surrender ceases to be necessary.
The word implies that there's something outside you to surrender to.
But you just notice what isn't, what's gone,
what you can never prove existed in the first place--
a sound, a name, a picture, a voice.
You keep noticing, until finally there's nothing to surrender to.
